Cognitive Behavioral Art Therapy

Disclaimer: you do not have to be an artist to do art therapy! Art therapy uses art, art-making, and other creative techniques as a tool in therapy. Appropriate for individuals of all ages and creative skill sets, this type of therapy uses art as a means of self-expression, exploring identity, and self-empowerment. Today most art therapists use the artistic process to guide therapy sessions and create a more equitable relationship, providing clients with a creative voice, control over how much they want to divulge, and a say in where treatment is headed.

Here at Oregon City Counseling we combine this approach with our love of science to get cognitive behavioral art therapy. In sessions, this means that art will be used as a means of cultivating values oriented thinking, expressing emotions, and examining life themes as well as unhelpful behaviors. In a virtual setting this means using whatever materials you have on hand!

Remember we are not your art teacher: we are not here to grade you! If you love making art or want to get back in touch with your creative side, contact us today.
