Developing Relationships
Scientific research indicates that the most important factor in effective therapy is having a meaningful relationship with your therapist. By naturally providing an understanding ear and an empathetic heart, our providers develop trusting relationships. They have the humble confidence to try something different if what they are doing is not helping.
Science Based Therapy
One of our most important values at Oregon City Counseling is to provide treatment that has clear evidence of working. The types of therapy that work are those that help you learn the skills needed to live life in a healthier manner. Most of our clinicians use Cognitive Behaivoral Therapy as their primary treatment as it has the clearest scientific evidence of helping clients achieve their therapy goals. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy also has robust scientific evidence and is used at Oregon City Counseling as well. Finally, any behavioral, skill based, therapy has been shown to help clients meet their treatment goals and so we use a clear communication skills package to help clients build healthier, more respectful relationships with others in their lives.
Finding a Fit
Finding the right therapist for you is one of the most important things you can do to make your therapy get you the results you want. A good place to start is to find a therapist who is trained in the type of therapy that best fits your needs. You can find a complete list of evidence based therapies with what they best treat here: https://div12.org/treatments/
Next, try therapists on for size. You should have a good sense within the first three sessions with a therapist whether they are going to be able to help you or not. If it doesn’t feel like a good fit, don’t persist with that clinician, just try another one. This is difficult and time consuming, but worth it to get the outcome you are looking for. Ultimately, it will be the quickest way to get results.
