Anger Management
Anger Management is actually not a great name for this type of treatment. Anger is an emotion, and so, by itself, not actually a problem. The problem is aggressive/disrespectful words and/or behavior. For those coming to Oregon City Counseling to get help with Anger Management we will take a behavioral approach to learning how to communicate assertively and respectfully, instead of aggressively and disrespectfully.
This behavioral approach will feel more like skill building than "traditional" therapy. The therapist is more like a coach than a therapist, teaching communication tools that the client can immediately begin to use and see results.
Like all things at Oregon City Counseling, Behaviorism is an approach rooted in science. It is actually the basis of all things scientific in psychology. Evidence Based Practices (https://div12.org/psychological-treatments/) are largely based on Behaviorism. For example, three therapies with some of the greatest amount of empirical evidence are:
Cognitive Behavior Therapy
Dialectical Behavior Therapy
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy; about which its creators say: "ACT is at its core a behavioral treatment." (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. Hayes, Strosahl & Wilson, p. 322)
